Shooters, I have just acquired an Arisaka that has been rechambered to the Wildcat 6.5 X .257 Roberts. I find myself in a quandry on what to feed it. Do I use the .257 Roberts loading info or something like the 6.5 X 57mm Mauser load info? Does anyone have any favorite loads for this combination? I have 107, 123, & 140 grain Sierra HPBT's in .264 and will use .257 Roberts dies and a 6.5 neck expansion die to set up the cases. I have most rifle powders, but I hear 3031 works well. So please tell me help is on the way. Thanks for all responses.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe the 6.5x57 Mauser and the 6.5x.257 Roberts is the same case. My logic is that if the 6.5x57 is the 7x57 case necked down, then you are home free as the .257 Roberts case is based on the 7x57 case. Regardless, you should be able to use 6.5x57 data as long as you start low and work up. Also, do a google search and you should be able to find data.

Actually the 6.5x57 is slightly different than the 6.5x257 Roberts case even though they are based on the same 7x57 case. Case capacity of the former is 53.73 gr of water and the later is 55.23 gr. Any loading data for either case will work. Speer #8 manual list the same data for both cases. Not sure what subsequent Speer manuals list. Bullets listed in #8 include 87,100, 120, and 140 gr. I have not loaded for either case but have done a lot with 6.5x55. Hockeynick and others have also loaded for 6.5x55; 55.04 gr of water. Nick has used some more modern powders than I. I have found that the case size works best with medium burn powders such as 4895 and 4320 for 120 and lighter bullets. The 140's seem to shoot best with 4831, AA3100 and slower burning type powders. I would not recommend using 6.5x55 data which lists higher charges across the spectrum. The 6.5 Arisakas are a strong but somewhat clumsey action as far as the safety goes and also cocking on closing and military type trigger. There are some small measurement differences in the case measurements at the shoulder of even .257 Roberts and 6.5x.257 cases. (go figure) If you size your cases in a .257 Roberts die make sure you size for a snug shoulder fit and fireforming should work. I'd recommend you invest in a set of dies in 6.5x257 Roberts. I would not recommend using .257 Roberts loading data. Also you will be overworking the neck by continually sizing to .257 then expanding to .264. Many of these rifles, if not all had chrome lined barrels. You would be advised to slug your barrel to see what it measures.

There are some loads listed on this web site:

Shastaboat & 7X57guy. Thanks for the recommendations. I have been trying to find some 6.5 X 257 Roberts dies without success and will continue to look. I will try to just neck size and fire form some brass to start with. Using 7 X 57 loading info reduced by 10% to start and step increasing should get me to the safe accurate loads I am looking for. If anyone has any ideas on where I should look for 6.5 X 257 Roberts dies I would appreciate the info. Thanks in advance.

You might contact RCBS, Hornady and LEE Precission. I know I've seen dies by all three manufacturers in this caliber.

Romeoburbs, what did you wind up doing for dies? I have a 1903 Springfield that has been chambered in 6.5 x 257 Roberts that i would like to reload. Anymore info on this cartridge would help.

There are 6.5x57 die sets on EBAY and they may work.
