I have it in my head I want to find the perfect load using a 150 gr. bullet for 308 win...used for whitetails only...mine will be shot out of a custom bolt gun....i have always used Nosler partitions exclusivly out of all of my rifles.........because of comments made on the Nest, i now want to experiment a while..remember ...choice for bullet..150 gr....powder choice as well...thanks, D451

Determined,

I basically agree with POP. My deer load for this fall is IMR 4064 and a 150 gr Sierra Gameking in my Tikka 308. The Gamekings are significantly more accurate than 150 gr Hornady bullets in my rifle and long shots along the edges of cornfields are possible where I hunt. Within 100 yards it shouldn't make any difference.

I don't believe that premium bullets are more effective for whitetails than conventional bullets. I will make a bold statement that conventional bullets are the best!!! Nosler Ballistic tips are too explosive for any shot that requires penetration and premium bullets that provide deep penetration are unnecessary for 95% plus of the deer I have seen shot.

Yeah, I agree with those guys. I shoot a 165 gr in mine, plodding along at 2700 fps, using Hornady's 'cuz I won't shoot anything else. They blow up very nicely. I've seen the Nosler's work as well, and it does the same thing, big exits. So just aim for the front shoulder and no worries. Oh, and 4064 has been the powder of choice.

150 hornady
2.8 g IMR 3031
Average 823 m/s

Thats 43.2 gr and around 2750 ft/s

I loaded these as practice loads because I had plenty of 3031. They group tighter than my other loads do and aren't much slower.

Beauty is truth, and truth beauty.

My .308Win. is in a light, short 20" barrel Browning Micro-medallion and it's rather finicky as to what it will shoot well. My best results come with a Sierra 150gr. HPBT and IMR4895 44.0grs. It has a MV of 2700fps. and prints groups as small as .543" (5 at 100yds). I find this rifle doesn't do all that well with 180gr. bullets. You really have to try a lot of combinations to come up with a winner. Best wishes.

Determined,

I've just spent the best part of 6 to 9 months working (or reworking) out the best loads for my Winchester pre 64 M70 featherweight in .308 Win after a long period of inactivity. I like the 150gr bullet weight in this cartridge. Being in Australia, we are restricted pretty well to the ADI powders. I chose AR2206 (similar to IMR4064, I believe) as it was developed by ADI specifically for the 7.62mm military round.

After much experimentation and time spent at the bench rest and the chronograph, the hottest load I have developed produced 2,950fps out of my 22" barrel. This load shot extremely well and consistently below MOA, sometimes down to .5MOA (3 shot groups). The powder weight was up to 48grs (which is over the ADI recommended maximum) so I may settle back on 47 or 47.5 grs (both yielding around 2,900 fps). The bullets I used were out of my fairly well stocked bullet drawer. The best y far was the Winchester Silvertips (don't know if they're still in production) and the Nosler Solid Base (which I understand are being reintroduced by Nosler).

Cheers,
Magnum

My Favorite Cal. to reload for the 308 Win. In my 308 Win with 150 grain Sierra Gameking BT I use 47.0 of VARGET with CCI BR-2 primers in WW cases. Match Grade Accuracy and excellent hunting load.

The load that I use the most and have collected Moose/Bear/Deer/Elk/Boar with my 308 Win SSG-69 is:

165 Sierra Gameking BT
VARGET @ 46.0
CCI BR-2
WW Cases
