| Say you have a bullet and you are not sure of what gr it is because someone gave them to you in an unmarked box. How do you find out what gr bullet it is. Thanks for your help. |

| Weigh it on a scale and measure it with a set of calipers, weight and diameter all in one swoop. Vet |

I think you mean "cartridge" instead of "bullet". In which case you're out of luck unless you disassemble the round..Unless it is for something that there is generally only one bullet weight for.

I say we need both IraqVet and Kansas Ed's, questions answered before we can give an answer with some clarity. Stan |

If the box is unmarked it could be commercial or handload. Then you have to wonder not only what bullet and grain weight, but also what powder and charge. How many rounds in the box? What are the headstamps? Can you identify the bullet manufacturer from the portion exposed? What's the OAL?
If you've got a bullet puller you can disassemble it,as Kansas Ed suggests. Make sure you weigh and measure before and after to help compare and indentify what you've got. |

If you are not 100% certain, then pull the projectile and fertilize your lawn.I am too enamored with my eyes and fingers to play "I wonder if it will work?'. I've seen two rifle blow ups at the range where shooters were using ammo of unknown origin. Luckily in both cases no injuries occurred, although we never did find part of one receiver. Thankfully, this piece of schrapnel missed everyone in attendance. rob |

| I can only answer a question based on the question presented. The question presented was fing wieght of unknown bullet. The answer given is the best way I have found to find weight of bullet and diameter if unknown. I believe the qustein was about bullet only so hence the answer I gave. Vet |

IraqVet,
You may be right, too. We won't know until Pilot 22 elaborates. |

| Vet, I read it the same way. In another thread Pilot stated he just started reloading and is using a progressive. He may not have a scale yet. However, if it is a loaded cartridge and you trust the source -- Shoot it up and load it again! |

I agree with vet. It could just be a box of bullets used for reloading.

Answer...YES. Stupid Me....I didn't think my scales went up that high but i just tried it and wa lah. Guess i will start out by burying my head. Thanks for making me think & Look. Pilot 22 |

| Pilot 22 most scales go up to 500 grs. so unless your shooting a really big bore rifle you should be able to wiegh most any bullet. Vet |

Hey Pilot 22...
Words don't do bullets or shooting justice...and there is no such thing as a stupid question in reloading.... I'm laughing with you on this, because I've been there many times. So many, in fact, I've put the following motto above my reloading bench....
"Look not...want not, Ask not...know not, Think not....be not."
Stay safe...shoot straight. |
